Megan Before and After Weight Loss

Tell us a little about yourself, your family, your job, etc…
I am 29 years old. I live in Northern Michigan with my boyfriend and German Shepherd. I had been thin my whole life, but when I started a household of my own I didn’t know how to cook so I went crazy with fast food and unhealthy meals. At first, I was embarrassed to share with my family that I was trying to lose weight, but the more they knew, the more they supported me. I work at an insurance office which I love, but it is difficult to lose weight when you sit at a desk all day.

How long did it take you to get to your ideal weight? Are you there now?
It took me about 6 months to lose 40lbs. I am about 5-10 lbs away from my goal. It is true that the last couple pounds are the hardest to lose. At this time, I am just trying to get through a busy summer with lots of temptations without gaining.

What was your motivation to lose weight?
Seeing myself in pictures.

Megan before losing weight

I love to be the center of attention and have lots of pictures taken. I found myself not wanting to share my winter vacation pictures with anyone because I wasn’t happy with the way I looked. I didn’t realize it at the time but my weight was also starting to cause some health problems.

What made you decide to start your weight loss journey?
My mom and I had been planning a once in a life time vacation to Italy, France, and Spain for over a year. I knew that there was going to be a lot of walking so I needed to be in shape. I also wanted to look great in my pictures and actually want to share them with friends and family. In June, we went on that vacation and I show my pictures to anyone who will look.

What kept you on track losing weight?
Weight Watchers. I track everything! The etools are so easy to use. Reading blogs also helps me A LOT. I am very inspired by other people. If they can do it I can do it.

Tell us about a typical day in terms of eating and exercise.
Fruit for breakfast, salad or sandwich for lunch (I find that usually I am most hungry at lunch time), for dinner… meat and veggies on the grill and angel food cake with fruit for dessert. I am not normally a snack person, but I used to be a night time eater so now I try to leave myself a couple points so I can have a little something before bed. I love that fruits and veggies are no points on Weight Watchers. Also, once a week I go out to a restaurant and have a nice meal. I order whatever I want and have a glass of wine. I find that weeks I have a “cheat” Meal (not day!) I am in a better place mentally. I also have fallen in love with spinning. In March, I made a goal to try two new fitness classes, one of which was indoor cycling. The first time I went, I puked and cried!  Now, I get withdrawals if I go less than twice weekly.

What is the biggest difference you have noticed because of your weight loss?
I have more energy, I am more social, I feel a lot more confident, and I have a lot less health problems.

What advice can you give to others struggling to lose weight?
You can do it! Start small. It is not going to happen over night. I just thought to myself I have been over weight for 4 years! Do you know how much weight I could have lost if I would have started 4 years ago?!?  You have to start somewhere.

How do you keep the weight off in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
I am not on a diet it is a lifestyle change. If I want to eat more I need to exercise more.

Give us a quote or a motto that you have used to keep you focused.
You can do it!
